Cryptologist Dr. Elena Voss immediately understands the symbols and the danger they pose. As she races to unearth the truth, a mysterious network linked to the power that once destroyed the Templars goes after the fragments as well, and will destroy anything that stands in their way. Elena is joined by field operative Antoine Rousseau and researcher Liam Hayes on a hunt that takes them across Europe. Follow them on this pulsating journey as they race through cathedrals, ancient ruins, and crypts, trying to decode symbols and unearth secrets that have been kept hidden through blood and silence.
Rich Petrelli’s novel is an exhilarating ride, and I can’t wait to read the entire trilogy. You are immersed in a world similar to that of Dan Brown's Angels & Demons. Just when you are sure that the heroine has hit the jackpot, she is whisked away to something else. And as time passes, the danger grows stronger. The plot is complex and filled with action-packed scenes and suspense. I loved the gorgeous prose, the short chapters, the timely paragraph breaks, and the excellent writing that make the book even more enjoyable. The characterization in The Hidden Cipher is one of the exceptionally accomplished elements of the story, and Elena’s intelligence and curiosity were infectious. This book gets my vote on every level.

The Hidden Cipher
As a young child growing up on Long Island, I spent many weekends waiting impatiently for my father to come home with a copy of The New York Daily News. Hidden among the news stories and advertisements was the Cryptoquote, and I was fascinated by those simple cryptographic puzzles. Each time I solved one, I carried it to him with pride: “Dad, I solved another one!”
I’m certain those early memories — the puzzles, the excitement, and the time shared with my father — helped inspire the series that became The Hidden Cipher.
The idea for *The Hidden Cipher* grew from a question I couldn’t let go of: what if the Knights Templar did not simply vanish into history, but left behind something that could still alter the modern world? That question became the foundation for The Templars Legacy Trilogy, following Dr. Elena Voss through a story built around hidden history, coded clues, ancient secrets, and modern consequences.
The first book also helped define the tone of the entire series. Reader response to Elena, Liam, Antoine, the Templar mystery, and the fast-moving international structure helped shape the next two books. It was the beginning of the conspiracy on the page, but also the beginning of a larger creative path — one that combines my interests in history, science, faith, travel, and the human stories hidden inside places.
The Black Chalice
The bar had been set with the release of The Hidden Cipher: a Readers’ Favorite 5-star review, kind words from readers and reviewers, and my wife, Zona, having to wait up all hours while I promised I would “just finish one more chapter.”
Writing *The Black Chalice* meant trying to meet — and hopefully exceed — the high-water mark set by the first book. It spent more than a year moving through drafting, revision, and final edits before release. There were hours and hours of writing, rewriting, cutting, expanding, and reshaping scenes until the pacing felt right. Go big or go home, I thought.
As the middle book of the trilogy, The Black Chalice had the hardest job: answer enough questions to satisfy readers while opening the door to something larger, darker, and more urgent.
Much of the final editing process focused on pacing, character pressure, and making sure the story did not simply repeat the structure of The Hidden Cipher.
This book also expanded the world of the trilogy. The mystery moved beyond ancient clues and hidden symbols into a broader conspiracy with real consequences for Elena, Liam, Antoine, and the people caught in the path of the story. It became the book where the past stopped feeling buried and began pressing directly against the present — setting the stage for the final installment, Babel.
Babel
With Babel, the challenge is simple to say and much harder to write: bring the trilogy home.
After The Hidden Cipher opened the mystery and The Black Chalice expanded the stakes, the final book has to close the loop, resolve the story arc, and give readers the kind of payoff a trilogy deserves.
A great deal of the work behind Babel has been studying real-world places, centuries-old orders, historical mysteries, international agencies, and the science of the atmosphere — including jet streams and the way the world above us connects the world below. The goal is not to write a textbook, but to build a work of fiction that feels rooted in reality: real places, real history, real questions, and a fictional conspiracy large enough to test Elena, Liam, Antoine, and the legacy of the Knights Templar one final time.
It also has to be the best of the best. That means sharper pacing, bigger consequences, a little humor when the darkness needs air, and a finale that brings the ancient and modern sides of the trilogy together without giving away the answers too soon. Babel is where the clues, characters, and hidden history finally have to meet.
